A kontinens-allegória – J. M. Coetzee Szégyen című regényének aktualitása

Summary

The allegory of the continent – The topicality of J. M. Coetzee’s Disgrace

John Maxwell Coetzee’s Disgrace was published in 1999 and shortly after its publication it won the prestigious Booker Prize awarded annually to the best novel published in Great-Britain or in any country of the Commonwealth. The novel primarily centres on the possibilities and obstacles of a/the postcolonial discourse, taking a closer look at the relationship of the previous colonies and colonising nations. Coetzee draws a parallel between gender roles and our underlying prejudices about the colonial world, all the while forcing the reader to think in a metaphorical framework as well. Even though the novel tells about universal human truths embedded in the world of South Africa, seemingly so strange to the European eye, Coetzee neither promises nor delivers consolation for his readers.

The paper will focus on the history of the relationship of the coloniser and the colonised, analysed from three distinct points of view. First, I will look at the symbolism of gender roles, more precisely their reversal; then, I will consider the changes in the different characters’ perspectives as the story proceeds. Finally, the paper will regard the subtle changes in the use of language and linguistic expression.
